> Legacy

Take a moment to think about someone who was part of your life in the past. Perhaps you remember a former business associate, family member or friend. Your memory of them was handed down to you because you were a part of their lives. Your recollection of them is their legacy.

“She taught me the value of hard work.” “He took a business that was failing and inspired us all to believe again.” “Because of her leadership, we found an entirely new market for a seemingly obsolete product.” “I grew up under his watchful eye; I became a seasoned leader.”

Legacies happen whether we want them to or not. Legacies can be good, bad, or somewhere in-between. As a senior leader you should seriously consider your legacy and consciously work to enhance it. What will those who worked in your firm, business unit, or functional area remember about you? What do you want them to remember?

It is easy to forget the legacy you will leave. After all, it is part of the future and your work demands that you be focused on the present. However, when you take a moment to consider this profound concept, it is ultimately more important than money or status. If you have doubts, spend some time with elderly people. You will find their legacy is often what sustains them. It represents their unique contribution and provides meaning to their lives.

After you get promoted, move to another firm, retire, or otherwise move on, what will those you now lead remember? What will you leave behind that represents your unique contribution? Something this profound is worth conscious consideration. What will be your legacy?
