We often hear that it’s the “little things that count” and
great leaders never forget it. I was in a client’s waiting
room the other day and a gentleman came through the door and began chatting
with the receptionist. Being a relatively small reception area,
it was easy to hear their conversation.
“Mary, how is your husband doing? Is he back on his feet? How
about your son, how is he doing at Penn State?” and the conversation
went back and forth as the visitor waited. While it seemed like
a relatively simple interaction, in many ways it was magical.
The visitor was a CEO of a $15 billion company
who happened to be a good friend and business partner of my client. This business leader
was affable, courteous, and genuinely interested in Mary. Even
with his many responsibilities, this leader still found time to connect
with another human being on a personal level. He was likeable.
Think about the most effective leaders you have
been around. While
no single attribute will by itself carry the day, likeability together
with credibility, courage, commitment and energy is a real differentiator.
Likeability may seem like a soft skill. Its impact is anything but.
