Abstract: To attract followers, authors Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones argue that all great leaders must be able to authentically play different roles.

Many people have perceived John F. Kennedy to be the embodiment of this type of leader.   In 1963 by proclaiming, “Ich bin ein Berliner” he connected with a nation in crisis. Years previously, when asked how he had come to be a hero he connected with veterans around the world by reluctantly replying, "It was involuntary. They sank my boat.”  While throughout his career with his dry witted “six o’clock comedy hour” press conferences he successfully won over the media.

How does a leader play many different roles and yet still be perceived as authentic?   In this thought provoking article the authors suggest several deliberate steps to take to help others perceive you as an authentic leader.
