Abstract: You are the new CEO and you are confronted with these contradictions: The more power you have, the harder it is to use without causing offense. You bear full responsibility for your company’s destiny, but you have limited power over most of what determines it. How will you succeed?

Harvard professors Porter, Lorsch and Nohria suggest that to succeed as a new CEO you must learn to manage several paradoxical aspects of this role.  In this article they outline “seven surprises” that new CEOs are likely to face and give detailed suggestions for successfully mastering them.
